World Travels and Tasty Treats

This week has been a busy one filled with a field trip and excursions to China and Russia. Our first field trip for the summer was to Global Foods Market in Kirkwood. The children were given a tour of the market and got to see many new foods from the 102 countries that import products to the store. While some children were taking the tour, others were shopping for ingredients to make one of four different recipes including: fried rice, Swedish meatballs, potato latkes, and Tiramisu. The students helped create these delicious treats on Thursday morning and then enjoyed a "tasting" of each of the teams dishes.

During Wednesday's trip to China the students had a "dragon relay", made fortune cookies, practiced using chopsticks and made paper fans. The students also made red envelopes which are used in Chinese culture to give "lucky money".

To finish the first session, the students traveled to Russia where they solved puzzles, made traditional birthday pies, and went on a scavenger hunt for nesting boxes.

From Africa to Italy

On Wednesday the students participated in the first "Pitstop" of our race. Our first stop was Nigeria. The students made an African rattle, created bracelets using African beads, and tested their balancing skills by carrying baskets on their heads.

Rounding out our week of travels the students enjoyed a pizza making relay race that ended in a tasty treat. Way to spice things up Cameron!

Around the World in 60 Minutes

On our second day of camp we enjoyed a trip around the world compliments of the Worldway Children's Museum. The museum brought interactive displays from the countries of Mexico, Korea, Senegal, China and the Philippines. The students had a chance to play instruments, create artwork, dress in native clothing and have a dragon parade in the atrium. This was a great way for us to jump into our study of the different cultures of the world.

We're Off and Running!

Our "Amazing Racers" are off and running and ready for their summer adventures. The students started their morning getting to know each other in the classroom and later met their teammates to create a team banner. The banners are on display in the atrium area. Check in throughout the summer to see how each team is doing.

This afternoon the students were busy with a variety of activities including making their own passports for their upcoming travels and splishing and splashing during our first water play day.
